Site Network: Personal | Podcast Ready |

Hey. My name is Russell Holliman. I'm a professional project manager by day, and one of the founders of Podcast Ready by night. This is my blog about life on the web, life in general, and random things I find here and there.

Facebook's New Look to be Permanent

Back when Facebook first showed off their new look, I gave it a try. For about a week I used to the new interface, although my preference was for the original. It wasn't until I came across a few things that I simply couldn't figure out that I switched to the original interface and apparently I'm not alone.

What do they say about 'all good things?'

Cutting Taxes for Start-ups That Don't Pay Taxes

I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow.

Sounds good? Think about it for a moment. High-tech start-ups don't have any capital gains. So what exactly is he going to eliminate?

DNC 2008 Speeches as Podcasts

Some select speeches from the recent Democratic National Convention have been compiled and are available either through iTunes or via this podcast feed. They are in M4V format however, so you portable video player might not be compatible if its not an iPod.

It seems odd to me that they wouldn't want to use a format that's more compatible with all of the players on the market.

Of course, that's only odd until I realized that the files are hosted by Apple directly; I wonder if Apple is going to do the same for the Republicans, or if this is a political statement.

Lost Cosmonauts: I Love a Good Conspiracy

gagarin-large

Not that I typically subscribe to conspiracy theories, or wear my tin-foil hat (very often), but I do love to read and hear about them. How this one has slipped passed me for so long I'll never know.

I tuned into the latest episode of Skeptoid this morning in which Brian Dunning was going over the facts surrounding the claims that the Soviets were launching humans into space long before anyone knew it. I had no idea.

His show led me to the site The Lost Cosmonauts where a lot of the evidence is presented. It seems that two brothers had set up an amateur listening post and were in the habit of recording various frequencies known to have been used throughout the Soviet space program.

At one point before the historical flight of Yuri Gagarin, the brother's claim to have made recordings which prove that other's had already been launched, and lost. The recordings include Morse code "SOS", a failing heartbeat, and even a female voice reporting trouble.

Got Dish? Get the DNC live and unedited

obamaI was browsing through my Dish Network channels tonight setting up the new SlingPlayer 2.0 Beta (obtw, SlingMedia has released the beta of the 2.0 version of their player for Windows and its nice) when I noticed channel 211 titled "Democratic Convention Live Feed." As expected, there's just a splash screen at the moment and some cheesy music, but a quick Google search resulted in confirmation that they will in fact be broadcasting a live, unedited feed from the convention to all Dish Network subscribers.

Mike Does Barcamp

My buddy Mike McGuff attended the recent Barcamp in Houston and is in the process of putting his video interviews online. Check out his blog or YouTube site for more as they come.

Now They're Getting Personal

A UK web site reports that US officials are now claiming the right to seize the iPods, cell phones, and thumb drives of any person entering the United States.

I'm all for security, and I've certainly had my fair share of searches at our fine airports, but until now its just been an inconvenience. Now, however, they are claiming that (regardless of suspicion of wrong-doing) they not only can seize any number of electronic items for later inspection, but they are required to then destroy the data if there is no reason to retain it.

So, if you don't have any terrorist or pornographic material, you can kiss all of your songs, movies, and files goodbye... for no reason whatsoever.
