Lost Cosmonauts: I Love a Good Conspiracy

gagarin-large

Not that I typically subscribe to conspiracy theories, or wear my tin-foil hat (very often), but I do love to read and hear about them. How this one has slipped passed me for so long I'll never know.

I tuned into the latest episode of Skeptoid this morning in which Brian Dunning was going over the facts surrounding the claims that the Soviets were launching humans into space long before anyone knew it. I had no idea.

His show led me to the site The Lost Cosmonauts where a lot of the evidence is presented. It seems that two brothers had set up an amateur listening post and were in the habit of recording various frequencies known to have been used throughout the Soviet space program.

At one point before the historical flight of Yuri Gagarin, the brother's claim to have made recordings which prove that other's had already been launched, and lost. The recordings include Morse code "SOS", a failing heartbeat, and even a female voice reporting trouble.

Got Dish? Get the DNC live and unedited

obamaI was browsing through my Dish Network channels tonight setting up the new SlingPlayer 2.0 Beta (obtw, SlingMedia has released the beta of the 2.0 version of their player for Windows and its nice) when I noticed channel 211 titled "Democratic Convention Live Feed." As expected, there's just a splash screen at the moment and some cheesy music, but a quick Google search resulted in confirmation that they will in fact be broadcasting a live, unedited feed from the convention to all Dish Network subscribers.

Now They're Getting Personal

A UK web site reports that US officials are now claiming the right to seize the iPods, cell phones, and thumb drives of any person entering the United States.

I'm all for security, and I've certainly had my fair share of searches at our fine airports, but until now its just been an inconvenience. Now, however, they are claiming that (regardless of suspicion of wrong-doing) they not only can seize any number of electronic items for later inspection, but they are required to then destroy the data if there is no reason to retain it.

So, if you don't have any terrorist or pornographic material, you can kiss all of your songs, movies, and files goodbye... for no reason whatsoever.
